Can you explain to me how a solar hot water system works? Do I still use a regular hot water heater?

Solar water heat takes place by using thermal collectors which gather the sun’s energy in the form of heat energy and stores that heat in a tank separate from the existing water heater. Your regular water heater will act as a back up for when the sun hasn’t created enough heat. This is referred to as a preheat system as the solar water heating system preheats the water before it goes into the backup water heater.
