How long do solar panels last?

Amber Q: How long do solar panels last and do they typically require a lot of maintenance?

A: Amber, there are several types of solar collectors so I will give you a general idea of the life of each type.

Solar pool collectors are usually made from a special blend of plastics and other compounds to provide longevity for sun deterioration. My favorite solar panel for pool heating is the Heliocol Pool Panel. It carries a limited lifetime warranty to the original owner.

Solar Hot Water Flat Plate Collectors are usually made of copper and have a design life expectancy of 50 years.

Solar Electrical (PV) Panels usually carry a 25 year warranty to provide 80% of their rated power. You can bet at the end of 25 years that the panels are still working and usually degrade at less than 1/2% per year. So you would probable find them still making half their rated power after 50 years. I hope this answers your question.
