What are the obstacles that face the success of the infamous “solar powered car”?

The solar powered car would have to be self contained to run when the sun didn’t shine. The storage of the energy to run the car in the dark is the major obstacle. The weight of the batteries is also a obstacle that needs to be addressed. The more probable short to long term solution is the electric car or plug in hybrid. They would be capable of using the energy collected from solar energy (PV) panels to do local travel without requiring petroleum fuels. This would be a major savings on air pollution in the cities from idling autos and stop and go traffic.
